Measles claims 4 children in two days

Two more children died of measles in the Mayo Hospital on Wednesday raising the toll to four in the past two days.

According to the hospital sources, the deceased were identified as seven months old Ijaz and one year old Iqra Jan.

On Tuesday, two children who were suffering from measles and were getting treatment at Children’s Hospital died while two more succumbed to the disease today at Mayo Hospital, raising the toll to four in only two days.

Sources said that so far the measles has hit at least 9,000 children from January across the Punjab and as many as 48 children had died due to the disease. Around 52 measles victim were still under treatment in various hospitals of the city.

Punjab Health Director General Dr Tanwir said they were short of vaccine and they could not inoculate about thirty million children. He said twenty eight children had so far died in the province due to measles. He said arrangements were being made to ensure availability of vaccine and anti-measles campaign would be launched in the first week of June.
