A jeweller was shot dead on Saturday near Rawalpindi’s Raja Bazar when he tried to resist a robbery in the precincts of City Police Station, police said.
According to police, Zafar Iqbal, a salesman at a jewellery shop in New Sarafa Bazaar, went to a money changer in Raja Bazar with Rs 150,000. When he reached the cloth market, two unidentified armed motorcyclists tried rob him off the money, to which Iqbal resisted. At this, robbers opened fire at the jeweller and took away the entire Rs 150,000, police said.
Local traders took the injured to District Headquarters Hospital where he was announced dead at arrival. After the incident, shopkeepers of Raja Bazar and Sarafa Bazar shut down their shops and protested against the inefficiency of the police, as the incident had taken place some 200 feet away from the City Police station.
Sarafa Bazar Jewelers Association President Khawaja Sohail Sadiq said this was the second incident of murder and was hopeful that the accused involved in the killing would be arrested.
“Police has always traced all the robberies at jewellers’ shops and we hope that the police will capture these robbers as well,” Sadiq said.
Station House Officer Inspector Mirza Yousaf Zaman said that an FIR had been registered in the City Police Station and an investigation was initiated to arrest the accused as soon as possible.
