Japan has decided to provide emergency relief goods worth up to 35 million yen (around 437,000 US dollars) to Pakistan.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will implement the assistance by providing tents, blankets and plastic sheets to meet the dire needs of those affected by the floods in 2012.
Even after two months since the monsoon caused floods in the southern Punjab, the northern Sindh and the north-eastern Balochistan, a large part of these regions still remains under water.
According to the damage update issued by the National Disaster Management Agency of Pakistan on November 7,474 deaths have been reported and approximately 5.04 million people (including approximately 160,000 persons in relief camps) have been affected so far. As the winter approaches, items such as tents, blankets and plastic sheets are urgently needed.
In the light of friendly relations between Japan and Pakistan, the Government of Japan has decided to carry out emergency assistance to alleviate the sufferings of those affected in the regions.
With this new emergency assistance, Japan’s humanitarian cooperation in support of the victims of floods in 2010, 2011 and 2012 amounts up to approximately 579 million US dollars.
