Senior Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira on Tuesday sought an apology from PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif for allegedly receiving funding from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to “steal” his party’s mandate in 1990 election. Addressing a hurriedly-called press conference, Kaira said the doors to poll rigging had been closed forever and challenged the PML-N leadership to try rigging the polls if it did not believe so. “Today the doors to polls rigging have closed and no one can win elections on basis of false propaganda and agencies’ support,” he asserted. Kaira’s assertions came following consecutive media interactions by PML-N leaders in wake of the Asghar Khan case verdict, in which the SC asked the government to recover money from politicians who received bribes from the ISI back in 1990. Asked why former PP chairperson Benazir Bhutto had conferred Tamgha-e-Jamhooriat on General (r) Mirza Aslam Beg if a conspiracy was being hatched against her government in late 1980s by him, the information minister said the award had been conferred upon the military as an institution, adding that the medal should be placed in the GHQ instead of Beg’s residence.
Kaira said what had been depicted by the court verdict was just a minor chapter of the condemnable propaganda, as various other characters and their wrongdoings were yet to be exposed.
The minister said the court verdict had proven Benazir Bhutto right, as all her statements were proving correct, including the theft of the people’s mandate.
He said though the people’s mandate was robbed in 1990, those responsible were strangely calling it propaganda.
Referring to the statement by PML-N’s Opposition Leader Nisar Ali Khan, Kaira said some people were demanding a judicial or UN commission, while others claimed accepting the verdict but rejected a probe by the FIA.
“I am surprised over the statements of PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif and others demanding establishment of a commission or investigation by the United Nations. It was the Supreme Court, not the government that asked the FIA to investigate the matter,” the information minister said.
Kaira also cited a statement by Benazir Bhutto in which she talked of threats from spy agencies of killing her jailed husband in case she did not accept the then government.
He said the robbery of people’s mandate had been proven by the court verdict, but the status of the government formed on basis of rigging was yet to be decided.
He said the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) was formed in 1986 when an army-led cell started gathering like-minded people and Gen (r) Hameed Gul formed the IJI after death of Ziaul Haq.
The information ministers said the PPP’s political adversaries had been coming to power using false propaganda and unconstitutional tactics, but the PPP always banked on the people’s mandate despite all conspiracies.
He said after former president Ghulam Ishaq Khan toppled BB’s government, then chief justice of Lahore High Court Rafiq Tarar ratified Khan’s decision and the judge was later awarded the presidential slot for the deed.
The minister also quoted news items of 1990s containing BB’s statements on establishment of a cell at the President’s House to rig the poll, which was proved later when the IJI won 105 seats with several of them getting 100 percent turnout.
Kaira also mentioned a white paper issued by Benazir Bhutto containing the tactics used to rig the polls and clarified that the PPP had nothing to do with Asghar Khan’s petition, as it was moved by Khan himself.
Citing PPP’s apology to the people of Balochistan, Kaira said his party leadership tendered an apology for mistakes committed by others.
To a question, he said action against elements involved in misusing the public money would be taken according to the constitution and law.
About Younus Habib, Kaira said Nawaz had granted him the license of Mehran Bank as a gift to hatch a conspiracy against the PPP.
He regretted that the government formed as a consequence of the rigged elections instituted cases against Benazir and Asif Ali Zardari.
To another question, he said the president was neutral and it was not fair to expect that he would be non-political, saying, “The president is part of the parliament, which is product of the political and democratic process.”
Kaira said even the incumbent PPP prime minister was neutral in his approach and the government released funds to opposition MPs on equal basis, besides giving them full respect.
He said it was the PML-N that ushered politics of turncoats in the country, adding that the party was still running a provincial government of turncoats.
The PPPP must seek apology from the nation of Pakistan for the break of Pakistan led to establish another country and the report of Retd.Justice Hamoor ur Rehman must be published so that the nation must know who is behind the scene who now are acting being the patriotic of this country.PPP leaders must check themselve, then they ctricise others.
YOU R A REAL B*A*ST*A*R*D invoking a useless point. IF PPP broke Pakistan why all the army governments including NawazSharif govt, Mushy Govt, and B ZiaUlHaq govt allowed Pakistan PPP to function as a political party in Pakistan for last 45 years. Shame on you. Lie has no legs.
@Lazim. Watch your lamguage.
Zulifiqar Ali Bhutto's PPP had lost national elections in 1970. Sheikh Mujeeb ur Rehman’s Awami League had won the national election.
Postelection scenario would have like this:
1.Sheikh Mujeeb ur Rehaman Prime Minster of Pakistan with a central Government and Awami league governing one province East Pakistan.
2.Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto leader of the opposition, just like Ch Nisar Ali of PML (N) at the present time and PPP forming governments in Punjab and Sindh.
3.Coalition governments in NWFP now KP and Baluchistan.
Bhutto refused to accept the election results and in connivance with Yahaya Khan conspired and floated poisonous ideas like "Idhar ham udhar tum". Bhutto did not act in democratic fashion. Above all when the world called for a political solution following a resolution moved by Poland Bhutto symbolically tore the resolution and refused to accept it.
The civil war in East Pakistan saw many atrocities perpetrated by Mukti Bhani which was trained financed and funded by India. Mukti Bhani killed officers and jawans of Pakistan Army raped Pakistani women and committed many atrocities. In one case the commanding officer was boiled alive by renegade Bengalis factions of Pakistan Army.
PPP’s leader could have been flexible but he was not. In his death cell he was talking about Sindhu Desh. He was driven by his personal ambitions and sad to see that he is regarded as a hero by some.
I have carried the burden of guilt of voting PPP and Z A Bhutto when he contested from Lahore Pakistan. I was young and naive and like many others deceived by Z A Bhutto.
PPP may not have been wholly responsible for breaking Pakistan but had a significant part in it dismemberment. PPP certainly did not act in manner to prevent dismemberment of Pakistan.
There should be a trial of those whether dead or alive who had a significant part to play in this. If this is a trail of graves so be it.
