Four decades of neglect

The neglect of the past four decades to build a hydroelectric dam has resulted in 12-hours load shedding in cities and 16-hour in rural areas. This is a result of dismal failure of successive governments since 1975 when Tarbela was completed whereas two military dictatorship and five terms of democratic set up alternated by PPP and PML-N failed to plan and build a hydroelectric dam. This has plunged the country in darkness with little regard by the authorities. All the successive government share the blame and responsibility for not building Kalabagh dam. Now when Bhasha dam funding seems to be a far cry and Bunji dam is found to be located on an active faultline the hope of relief from water and power woes has receded in the distant future.
It is time the Apex Court takes a notice of the serious situation that could land Pakistan in a terrible state with closure of industries and massive unemployment leading to law and order situation of anarchy and looting that would tear the fabric of our society. The faulting governments ought to be taken to task to save Pakistan.

  1. The blame lies squarely with the PPP leadership, the Water Accord of 1991 by Nawaz Sharif was an excellent example of consensus building on Kalabagh dam but was rejected by Benazir Bhutto, Musharraf tried his best to get a consensus on Kalabagh dam but was thwarted by Sindh, the present PPP leadership is following in the footsteps of Benazir Bhutto, even now the Water Accord is the best solution to the problem, status quo will result in drying up of the country with disastrous consequences.

  2. Water Accord – 1991 was not made with consensus. It was imposed upon Sindh. Plz see the record. Sindh accepted it with reservation and you have been told many times. Instead of confirming from record, you are misguiding the readers. It is very sad, Punjab wants to impalement only the Articles which are in its favours and not those which favours Sindh. Ruination of Indus delta, emerging Environmental disaster in Sindh and leaving 2.6 million Muslims and Pakistani Sindhis living in the area downstream Kotri and Arabian Sea to die in hunger and thirst by not releasing limited water despite it was agreed by all to release water downstream Kotri. Still they want to build Kalabagh dam in Punjab to turn whole Sindh into desert as as said by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto while observing sit in at Kamoon Shaheed, Sindh – Punjab border many years back.
