Future is hydel, not coal

The Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf is reported to have said that Thar coal project is nation’s future. This is only half truth. Complete truth is that hydel route is the future as it addresses both the needs of water and power. Coal can produce only energy but does not store water like a mega hydroelectric dam and the cost of energy is many times the hydel energy while coal energy is not clean and it is not renewable like hydel energy. The PM who had declared to bury KBD is now riding on the band wagon of coal to have coined a new slogan that coal is the future of Pakistan which is fallacious.
The only remedy for our ills is post-haste construction of two hydroelectric dams, KBD being the earliest to build and operate. PPP would sink or swim on KBD in the next election but the leaders seem to have a blind spot in that coal looks green to them while it is black. In fact, the PM is responsible for creating a dark Pakistan sans light that has blighted the industry and agriculture alike to the impending economic disaster staring us in the face.

  1. ADB has backed out from its commitment to fund Bhasha dam and wants a broader coalition of donors which also includes the World Bank. But the World Bank has already refused on the plea that the site of the dam is in disputed territory. Both ADB and WB will have no such objection to Kalabagh dam. Pakistan cannot put all its eggs in the Thar coal basket because we need water for irrigation as much as we need power. A 70:30 mix of hydel to thermal is the future of Pakistan.

    • The world is generating more than 50 per cent electricity from coal and only 7/8 per cent from hydel but in Pakistan for poltical reasons, conspiracies are being hatched against gigantic project of Thar coal in order to find socalled justification to build controversial Kalabagh dam inPunjab, because it is in Sindh. The world Bank is supporting the biggest coal project in South Africa and second such big project in Gujrat (India) whereas about 600 industries based on coal are working on surface in USA.

Please stop conspiracies against Pakistan. The corrupt and notorious WAPDA and Planning Commission of Pakistan both must end their conspiracies towards Thar coal in order to make Pakistan self sufficient in energy.

    • Hydel is not future of Pakistan. you are totally wrong. Coal is future of Pakistan as more than 50 per cent electricity is being generated through out world from coal and only 7/8 per cent from hydel.

Please stop conspiracy against Pakistan and abandon your plan to convert Sindh into desert completely. You people have already ruined Indus delta in Sindh, it is strange you are still not satisfied.

  2. If coal is the future of Pakistan what do we do for water. Mr Sial is perhaps forgetting that agriculture is the back bone of Pakistan's economy, contributes 24% to GDP, earns 60% of the export revenues, employs half the labour force of the country, and provides livelihood directly to 70% of the rural poulation. Kindly do not print comments which are totally devoid of reality

  3. Through out world 50 per cent electric is being generated from coal and only 7 to 8 per cent from hydel. Do you think are they mad? We have have gigantic deposits of coal in Thar sufficient to meet energy required of this lovely country for centuries as claimed by our atomic scientist Dr Samar Mubarrak Mand. For God sake, do not oppose it because it is in Sindh.

You have advise me not to print comments that according to you are devoid of realty, but what language you have used against me, does it suit to you like "stupid" and "non sense". However, I never used used such language against you. I hereby advised you, you must have courtesy to apologize me for your objectionable language, but in vain.

  4. I apologise for using unparliamentary language when I lost patience with your logic. On the one hand you talk about Sindh becoming a desert and in the same breath you object to the construction of more dams. Please let me know what method you have in mind for increasing the supply of water. The 104 maf that we have been getting every year for the last many years cannot meet the demand which is increasing every year. It is only when we increase the supplies that Sindh and the Indus delta along with the rest of the country will be able to get more water.
