‘Tandoor boy’ proves where there’s a will there’s a way

Punjab University’s graduation (BA/BSc) result has rung a timely reminder with regards to the richness of talent in this country. If a nation can dig out a topper from within the scorching heat of a tandoor, you know there are some serious diamonds waiting to be unearthed from within its reservoir.
Muhammad Mohsin Ali, a tandoor boy, topping the BA/BSc examinations is not merely a testament to the aptitude in this country it also showcases a tale of sheer perseverance and determination. If one can take time out from serving the nutritional needs of others to have the craving for food for thought, it shows the drive in the young man who’s now eying MA English with his eventual target being CSS exams.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced that the provincial government will bear the education expenses of Mohsin, son of a laborer of Hafizabad, who topped the list of private candidates by obtaining 688 marks in the PU BA/BSc examination.
Talking to reporters, Mohsin said he is son of a laborer and works at a tandoor to help his father.
“I could not afford college fees due to which I appeared in the exams as a private candidate,” he said.
According to the result, Mohsin was the overall topper with 688 marks out of 800.
In BSc, Punjab College of Science Ferozepur Road Lahore’s Sania Riaz obtained 686 marks, Government Queen Mary College Lahore’s Sundus Shehzadi got 658 marks while Punjab College for Women Civil Lines Gujranwala’s Suneela secured 655 marks and stood 1st, 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
In BA, private candidate Kanwal Latif got 668 marks and stood 2nd while 3rd position was jointly shared by private candidates Muqaddas Shehbaz and Maria Anam by securing 661 marks.
Earlier addressing the award ceremony, Punjab University (PU) Vice Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran said that the main reason behind the problems being faced by Pakistan is that the nation has never been set on the path of knowledge and research.
According to statistics provided by the examination department of the university, a total of 143,750 candidates appeared in the exams out of which 57,284 students passed the exam. Overall pass percentage stood at 39.85 which showed a six percent increase from last year.
Dr Kamran said that according to an Iraqi scholar, 250 verses of the Holy Quran were related to legal and administrative affairs, and around 750 verses stressed on mankind to explore the mysteries of the universe and seek knowledge. He said that the great weight and importance attached to these verses had not been realized in our society which prides itself in Islam, adding that the present situation in the country was the result of ill conceived policies.
He said that the government should allocate at least 4 percent of the GDP for education and one percent for research.
He said the funds allocated to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) had been slashed despite the availability of money. He said that the government and the HEC clashed on the issue of the verification of politicians’ degrees. He sent an appeal to the federal government to make all-out effort for national consensus for the promotion of education.
Dr Kamran congratulated top position holders on behalf of PU teachers, employees and students and advised the students to spread the light of knowledge throughout their lives.
