Solution to energy crisis

We are the real ‘God gifted’ nation but have unfortunately failed to drag ourselves into the category of the developed ones. It is us, who have 850 trillion cubic feet of coal in Sindh. It is worth 25 trillion US dollars, but only if exploited. The question, which is really difficult to answer, is “why aren’t we exploiting our reserves?”

I imagine myself sitting out the earth on at a different planet. The world would seem to be like a giant spherical country, and Pakistan one of its towns. The first idea that would blink into my mind would be that the residents of the town are burying themselves alive.

Well, in my opinion there is a big YES to the fact that we are burying ourselves alive. We have untouched oil and gas reserves under the barren mountains of Balochistan and the sands of Sindh – we have coal, estimated at 175 billion tons. If the natural gas we found in Sui could have been used for power generation projects, there would have been no such phenomenon of ‘loadshedding’, and we would have been immensely developed. But unfortunately due to lack of good plans and ideas, it could only be reserved for domestic use, CNGs and to be honest millions of pounds got wasted due to leakage in pipelines spread over hundreds of miles.

The politicians have always proved to be heroes, but mostly only in the arenas of debates and controversies. The entire country is in a state of commotion and outrage but they are quite insensitive to the sufferings of the people. Due to a wide gap between the generation and the consumption, the industry is most affected and is at a standstill. The educational institutions, the hospitals, the households across the state are undergoing indescribable difficulties. I may say that the population is turning into psychological patients. Only if a minor portion of the debt (62 billion dollars approximate) had been used in buying exploitation equipment, the result would have been great. “Where there is a will, there is a way”. Only if the government had looked forward to this perception, new dams could have been built and we would have been easily out of this disastrous situation.

People mostly talk about the intensity of energy crisis but never give solutions to the problem. I would like to go towards the solutions, starting with conservation of energy. Keeping in mind, the rising population, and requirement of energy it is best to think about saving energy. Some minor steps can be taken to save energy, varying from unplugging unused appliances, saving daylight, turning off lights while leaving the room, and using light dimmers, to time management by the government. This might seem trivial but it can bring us out of this predicament.

Apart from conservation of energy, hydroelectricity, the solar, wind and geothermal and thermal power are the best alternatives to overcome the deepening energy crisis in Pakistan. I would suggest geothermal power, as there is a great capacity of generating 100,000 megawatts of electricity through this technology. Solar and hydel power is also the cheapest source of energy. Solar energy is the best and suitable form for Pakistan as the country has a potential of generating 29,000 MW electricity from the sun. The options to make energy are always open and could go on and on, but it is the sincerity of the government with the people to make policies for their good, that really matters.

The basic reason of removing the pen’s cap is to tell that we are a resource rich state – it is a matter of exploiting them to make the country prosperous. And it is only possible if we think wisely.

  1. yes we r real god gifted nation but we have no unity ,th power of unity built the strong nations unfortunately we dont have it.if a common person realize how to solve the problems of neighbour,relatives a pakistani and how to help them how to work together and face the problems with unity ,muslimhood then our thoughts . our aims ,and gains would be same then we easily find out the solution of energy crisis and other crisis in our country.

    • i think our government is still not serious to resolve this electricity problem. government says they have no funds to start any ( coal, wind energy etc) project. if they are borrowing from IMF & statebank or from for infrastucture or for their own then why they

    • Govt is doing it's best but actually there is a Politics being played on the Coal of THAR.

  2. We are depend on just non-renewable sources its very costly for people specially for poor they can not afford therefore they are using hook system, if we depend on renewable sources like solar energy, like wind energy, and water energy in this way we can make cheapest energy about 48,000 megawatts, its enough for us because we need 20,000 megawatts in this way we can store and sell to another country.

  3. I really appreciate the idea but it lacks in following.
    1: Energy Saving is not a valid option for us right now to meet energy crises since demand and supply difference exceeds 5500 MW.
    2:Our Hydal DAM reached their end limits.
    3:The only sustainable option left is to construct new dams.
    4:Its time for us to fight once again for our country survival to meet energy crises .

  4. Good article but as usual we can only write good articles but practically we are nothing. What is the cause of this crisis and why this happened? Everybody knows but nothing is done to punish the culprits. Prime Minister statement of selling the energy to other countries is just another lies as there is no other country like Pakistan to whom you can sell this energy. This nation has destroyed their country and is crippling towards its death. Neither articles nor positive thinking can solve the problem; it needs physical efforts which are not there. Corruption is at its peak. Every influential person is exploiting the available resources and even the sacred activity was looted. Nothing can done except going back to Stone Age. This is the fate of all corrupt nations.

  5. SORRY TO SAY BUT REALITY IS THAT PAKISTAN IS NOT A GOD GIFTED COUNTRY…………FIRST TO CLARIFY IT DOES NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT RESERVES….UR COAL IS NOT GOOD QUALITY…MOSTLY SULPHATED….POOR INGNITION …..SECOND NO GAS RESERVES….LARGEST WAS DISCOVERED IN RUSSIA…NEAR SIBERIA….IF PAKISTAN HAD ALL D RESERVES THEN BY NOW U SHOULD HAVE ATTRACTED FOREIGN COMPANIES…..UR COUNTRY WOULD HAVE BEEN LIKE SAUDIA ARABIA…..SORRY TO SAY…BUT THE MAIN RESON BEHIND IS CORRUPTION AND REDUCTION IN UR AID FROM USA…PLUS IRAN SANCTIONS FROM JULY 1ST……LOW GROWTH AND LOW GDP IS MAIN RESON…;-)

    • Be content with what we(Pakistani) have. What if we didn't had any of this????
      Yes the quality of coal is a but rusty but Dr Sammer Mubarak is working on this project they are trying to convert coal into Gaseous form to ignite them inside the earth, means you don't have to take it out.
      We are interested in the heat energy prouced by the coal not at quality of coal, we require heat for Boiler then to Turbine and then into Generator to get Electricity.

  6. yes u r saying well but infect we r still sleeping n the other countries getting benefit from us .its a very thinkable aspect.our politicians would have to think wisely and purely then we overcome such type of crisis other wise cant do any thing for the betterment of our god gifted land…………firstly we 'll have to correct himself.then we able to produce something new.we would have to eradicte the corruption from nip the bud.electricity is a major issue to discussed .w should reproduce the dams ,enrgy sources like manglah dam than our industry brought up revolution.

  7. "A lion, leading 100 jackal is far better than 100 lions leaded by a single jackal."
    Our country exploitation is because of worse(not bad) governance.

  8. Don't look at the dark side of picture, be +ve. This energy crises gap cannot be suddenly outclassed it requires some time. We don't have any Genie to do this job we all pakistani's have to face it. If u want to reduce loadshedding, do these steps
    * avoid theft of electricity,
    * use electricity effeciently
    * pay your bills on time,
    * and main thing is "Discourage people who theft electricity"

  9. there is no sincerity in the govt and the main root of energy crises is corruption again done by our insincere politicians.

  10. hum log waqae Allah ki nashukri quom bante ja rahe hain warna humare pas kia kuch nai hai main apne samait tamam quom ko is sab ka zimmadar samajhta hun

  11. yes,i think energy crises has reached its peak in pak and and the whole nation is confronted with this woe.i would like to say that debate and article do nothing only pregmatic steps should be taken and it is only the govt who can resolve this issue and common civilian have no panacea.

  12. the main cause of energy crisis is due to our greed and carelessness.we should save and protect our source of energy.
