The Punjab University launched the golden jubilee edition of its annual magazine ‘Mahver’ on Tuesday.
Veteran literary personalities of the PU alumni were invited for the launching ceremony of magazine held at the PU New Campus.
Senior analyst Orya Maqbool Jan, renowned poet Amjad Islam Amjad, Safdar Saleem Syal, Dr Khalid Hummayun, Iftikhar Feroz, Saleem Mansoor Khalid and a large number of students participated in the event. PU Vice-Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran congratulated the editorial board of ‘Mahver’ for their hard work on the golden jubilee number. The magazine is a compilation of writings selected from the issues of the magazine published in last fifty years.
He advised the Mahver team to ensure the regularity of the magazine for the coming years as there was a lapse of several years between the two magazines. Orya Maqbool Jan said in the 5,000-year old history of mankind, no nation educated in a foreign language had progressed.
He said unfortunately, our language had been snatched from us.
He said our educational institutions were not treating Urdu language properly and reminded that the doors of knowledge were first opened by the Muslims. Maqbool stated that the British translated knowledge into the English language to educate their nation in their own language. Amjad Islam Amjad, who also served as the editor of ‘Mahver’ in 1967, said such journals and ceremonies added to the beauty of educational institutions.
Safdar Saleem Syal, the first editor of ‘Mahver’, said man could be recognised by his behaviour and etiquettes and not by his knowledge. Saleem Mansoor Khalid, the editor of the magazine in 1977, said the purpose of publishing ‘Mahver’ was to polish and promote the creations of students and that the regular publication of the magazine will be ensured.
