The employees of Lahore Electric Supply Company are abstaining from wearing their uniform or travelling in the official vehicles in order to save themselves from the charged protestors, Pakistan Today learnt on Wednesday.
These officials have also been conveyed verbally to remain in civilian clothes so that they might not be attacked. Similarly, the official vehicles are also source of potential threat for the senior officials. Linemen, meter-readers and guards wear an official uniform provided by Lahore LESCO while the Sub-divisional Officer (SDO) and XEN of the company travel in official vehicles bearing logos of the company. However, after the start of violent protests, these employees are abstaining from using all these facilities. The situation worsened when protestors attacked the office of LESCO in Icchra area on Tuesday. Since that attack, the offices of the whole city are on red alert and the employees present in the offices try to abstain from coming in official vehicles. On Wednesday, there was also attack in Township area and the staff present in the office remained worried.
A couple of days ago, the official vehicles of Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) were attacked by the protesters and a number of people sustained minor injuries. Since then the official transport of the authority is taking precautionary measures to meet any untoward situation. “Our duty ends at 4pm but for the last few days, we go early in order to save ourselves from the protesters,” said an official of WAPDA adding that the drivers had also resorted to taking the routes where there were no protesters.
The SDOs and XENs of LESCO are also least interested in the official vehicles. “It is better that I use my personal vehicle for coming to office,” said a senior official of LESCO from Township area adding that the majority of his colleagues and other employees are also not using official vehicles.
The linemen and meter readers of the LESCO are also not their wearing uniforms.
“I am not wearing my uniform or any such identity, which gives even a grim chance that I am an employee of LESCO,” said a lineman of LESCO adding the staff is also abstaining from coming to offices. “Either, the employees leave early or try to come at the time when there is no protest,” he added.
The LESCO official said the protestors should understand that they had nothing to do with the load shedding. “When the protesters are angry then they never think logically and try to sooth their anger by attacking official vehicles and offices,” another LESCO official added.
