Reach out to the Baloch

The package recently introduced by Pakistan Navy to facilitate induction of the youngsters of Balochistan both in the officers’ and sailors’ category is quite remarkable.

The special concession given in the academics, age limit and entry tests would certainly relieve the young men of Balochistan who lag behind to meet the criteria due to insufficient educational facilities. This indeed is a commendable nation building effort on the part of Pakistan Navy to bring the youth of Balochistan into the mainstream life and improve their social and financial conditions.

The Baloch have long been suffering from injustices meted out to them by the security establishment. The resentment that they have built is not without cause. Maybe these efforts to reach out may classify as ‘too little, too late’ but it is better late than never. It must be stressed that these efforts to reach out will not bear fruit if the atrocities being committed against them are not stopped and their sons and daughters keep going missing.

It is also high time for the government of Balochistan to work out judicious policies to resolve social and political issues in Balochistan and initiate long and short term projects for the uplift of the deprived people.
