Where have all the trees gone?

Lahore has recently been adorned with banners about tree planting and it is a good initiative by the government. When the Canal Bank road was widened, many trees lining its sides were lost. The Punjab chief minister then promised that for each tree cut, five trees would be planted. But there has yet been no headway on that. Lahore was once a city lush with trees.

That is no more. We do not realise how important trees are to our ecosystem and that saving trees is not just hippie, tree-hugging nonsense. As it is said, we will only realise when the last tree has been cut down that money cannot be eaten.

Lahore’s environmental degradation in the recent years has been alarming and the loss of its trees is a major contributing factor. Not only the government but people at the individual level must make efforts to rectify that.
