For a government that is nearing the end of its tenure, it is displaying undue haste in signing contracts for induction of expensive new B777 in PIA, in violation of all PPRA rules which regulate transparency. It is an airline which instead of hiring a reputed qualified Chartered Accountant as Chief Internal Auditor has preferred services of a retired finance manager holding US nationality. PIA management is dominated by mediocrity and cronies with a reputation for no integrity.
This also points to over confidence in belief that in Pakistan nobody involved in big scams and irregularities in such deals has ever been caught. Those who dare flourish run away to their new adopted countries whose nationality they hold. PIA deal follows similar irregularities in violation of rules by Pakistan Railways for procurement of 75 engines from a company of ill-repute based in China, which had previously supplied defective locomotives during Musharraf’s era. It reminds me of an interview on a private TV channel by former MD PIA Ch Ahmed Saeed, who stated that his younger brother believes that there will never be any accountability in Pakistan, so why bother.

With a chairman like this and an MD whose sole qualification is just an FA and the fact that he is classs fellow of AZ, PIA was bound to go in a loss.
