World Health Organisation, Vector Control Focal Person Dr Qutbuddin Kakar has said that despite efforts of over 50 years, Pakistan lags behind Thailand and Sri Lanka in terms of dengue control. He said, these countries had managed to reduce the mortality rate by improving their healthcare management system, and that vaccine and antiviral drug had not yet been developed, and therefore, controlling the disease depends upon preventing mosquito eggs from becoming the larva. He believed that the public had a huge role to play in dengue curtailment. He expressed these views while addressing an awareness seminar regarding dengue at a local hotel, here today.
Dr Qutbuddin further said that increase in population; migration due to jobs; modern lifestyle and carelessness in treatment were the causes of dengue expansion. He said that the dengue mosquito bites in white light (energy saver) at night and that solid waste management was being carried out in Lahore with regards to controlling the disease. However, he believed, that there was a need to organise and channelise the movement in other cities as well to eliminate breeding places of mosquito could be eliminated. He said that government alone could not eliminate the disease from every house and the community would have to play its part.
