Despite the Punjab government’s tall claims of running an effective campaign for dengue eradication, waste material, condemned articles and debris of construction material are lying in premises’ of various government departments.
Punjab Additional Chief Secretary Nadeem Hassan Asif, in his letter to all heads of government departments, expressed concern over the situation and asked for immediate action to overcome the dengue threat.
“It has been observed with concern that some waste material/condemned articles and debris of construction material are lying in various government departments’ premises and open spaces under their control, which serve as storage space of water, hence providing a most favourable breeding ground for dengue mosquitoes and its larva/eggs,” Asif wrote. He asked these organisations that focal persons appointed by them should personally inspect their offices and ensure disposal and removal of such waste, condemned material and debris immediately.
Asif expressed concern that despite an effective campaign for dengue eradication and proper display of anti-dengue measures, the situation warrants immediate attention of all officials concerned. He said that a mechanism was also evolved for office buildings and premises by appointing a focal person, with a team for his assistance, to ensure implementation of instructions of the campaign. But such instructions were not taken care in several departments and immediate steps be taken to help eradicate dengue, Asif wrote.
