Water and Power Minister Naveed Qamar warned the Senate on Thursday that the entire country would be unplugged if the facility of free power supply to WAPDA officers and workers was suspended.
In a question hour at Senate, Naveed Qamar said although the government had ordered discontinuation of free units to the Wapda employees, the utility’s union refused to abide by the directive.
“If such an action was taken, the entire country would have to face a blackout,” he warned.
He said the CEOs of different power suppliers including the WAPDA chairman enjoy facility of 2000 free units while Grade-21 and 22 officers receive 1100 free power units each.
He said further that officers of Grade-19, 18 and 17 get 800, 600 and 450 free electricity units respectively.
He said electricity theft was being made a punishable crime under which severe punishments had been proposed.

  1. Mr Qamar,

This can't be true and this is most definitely not true.

Nowhere in the world this luxury is offered to the employees of an organisation. The most different business concerns do is to provide their product to their employees at a discounted rate. WADA which is now run like a business must follow the accepted business practices.

Besides being highly unfair and discriminatory this is just not workable. Imagine if any number of car manufacturing companies namely TOYOTA, HONDA etc. in JAPAN or VW in Germany were to do the same. I can assure you they will out of business within days.

WAPDA employees must at least pay the cost price of producing the electricity they use.
You said to have an MBA from California and an MS from Northop.

I wonder for a man with your educational background how on earth you made such a frivolous statement. Unless you have been quoted out of context in which Pakistan Today would owe you an apology.
    Truly yours.
