Power politics

Everybody’s been talking of the Imran Khan spanner thrown into the works of Punjabi politics. It is being surmised that since his support base is the same as that of the PML(N), he might be the dark horse in the upcoming elections. But I think that his effect is being overestimated in certain aspects.

As the Sahiwal bye-elections might indicate, he might not be the electoral spoiler in himself that he is being vaunted as. Although he might spoil the PML(N) party by eating into its votebank and tipping the scale towards the PPP-PML(Q) nexus. While Imran Khan might fail at constituency politics, one cannot deny that his rhetoric holds sway over the public imagination. He makes all the right noises and the public doesn’t care if they are naïve or unsubstantive. The upcoming rallies of PML(N) and PTI are nothing but them flexing their muscles. They have started their campaign early. It’ll be interesting to see how things turn out come election time.

  1. Let PTI contest the next bye elections–Imran Khan is in for the shock of his life–People view him as a supporter of Zardari, Musharraf and Shujaat.
