The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) announced on Tuesday the annual results 2011 of Higher Secondary School Certificate Part-II (Intermediate) Pre-Medical Group, with girls bagging all top three positions and the overall pass percentage of 51.26 percent.
According to the issued gazette, 3,080 male and 12,638 female candidates had registered for the annual examinations out of which 3,032 males and 12,495 females appeared in the exams.
Around half of the students, 1,163 male and 6,796 female students were declared passed, of which 127 male and 680 female candidates got A-1 grade; 301 male and 1,838 female students achieved A-grade; 321 male and 2,142 female candidates passed the exams in B-grade; 260 male and 1,741 female candidates managed to get grade C; 144 male and 391 female students got D-grade; while 10 males and four females passed in the E-grade.
Girls beat the boys by securing all top three positions in the board exams.
Sobia Azfar, a student of the PECHS college for women, clinched the first position by scoring 994 marks out of 1,100 with the percentage of 90.36. She had also secured the first position in her matriculation in 2009.
Urba Ashfaq, another student of the same college, secured the second position with 990 marks (90 percent).
Tazeen Fatima Rizvi, a student of the Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, bagged the third position with 986 marks and a pass percentage of 89.63 percent.
Taking to the media, Azfar said: “Load shedding and lawlessness are major problems faced by students during their studies. There was no electricity when we were preparing for our papers; and I gave all papers during power load shedding.”
Urba supported Sobia’s views as she opined that long hours of power load shedding and the prevailing violence have badly affected the preparations for examination.
“During practical exams, I was uncertain of the schedule due to strikes and untoward situation in the city and BIEK often postponed the practical exam,” Tazeen remarked.
BIEK Chairman Anwar Ahmed Zai said the students would now receive computerised enrolment forms which would carry the students’ photographs as well. “It has been decided that pictures of the candidates would also be pasted on their mark sheets from the next academic year.”
