Just a few days from Eidul Fitr, commuters are facing a lot of problems due to an increase in the fares of inter-city transport and shortage of transporting vehicles. Most people are also facing acute shortage of tickets in the last week before Eid.
“I want to celebrate Eid with my family in Karachi but was unable to get a ticket despite visiting the reservation offices for three days,” said Sanam, a working woman in Islamabad. She added that the situation would get more critical as the festival drew near. On the other hand, like every year, people are complaining about overcharging by transporters who are charging more than two times the normal fares.
“I have to join my family living in Muzaffargarh for Eid, local transport services charged Rs 600 above the normal fare, which is Rs 1,000,” said Tariq Mureed, an businessman in the capital. The situation is not only an increasing burden on the common people but also resulting in the exchange of hot words between transporters and commuters as travellers are not ready to accept the increase in fares made by transporters of their own will.
The survey of major bus stands in the twin cities including Pirwadhai, Faizabad and Karachi Company showed that these practices are common on all routes.
