Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Saturday the incumbent government should complete its mandated term, as it was its constitutional right to do so.
“In the past, governments were not given space to complete their tenure, but it will be beauty of democracy if change comes from within or out of the House. That change can come,” Shahbaz said while talking to reporters at Quaid-e-Azam International Airport.
Only a few days ago, Shahbaz’s party chief, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif had called for immediate mid-term polls over the government’s failure to deliver on its promises to the masses. Commenting on the new provinces issue, the Punjab chief minister said new provinces should be carved out on administrative, not ethnic or racial basis. “Five to 15 new provinces should be formed on administrative grounds, my party will have no objection,” Shahbaz said, adding that a national commission be formed to decided the matter.
Karachi: Asked about the situation in Karachi, he said every option should be exercised to restore peace to the city, including that of calling in the army. “The Karachi issue should be taken to parliament to seek its view. There should no mercy for those who are killing innocent people, including children and women, in the port city,” he added. Shahbaz said the government had become totally insensitive to the massacre in Karachi, where roads have been reddened with the blood of innocent people. He said further delay in restoring peace to Karachi would result in more destruction. “The elements playing havoc in Karachi should be dealt with an iron hand so that terrorists are made an example for others intending to indulge in crimes.” He said a PML-N delegation would soon visit Karachi to express solidarity with the people of the city. “The city of lights and the country’s financial hub has turned into a town of horror. Every Pakistani is in a state of sorrow over the loss of life,” he said.
Relief: Earlier, Shahbaz visited Badin district, as well as flood-affected Golarchi Taluka of the district. The Punjab CM said the people of Sindh would not be left alone in their hour of need, adding that he had brought 36 truckloads of relief good for the rain-flood affected people of Badin on behalf of the people of Punjab. “People of Punjab will send more relief good for other rain- and flood-hit districts of Sindh.” Shahbaz said relief goods had also been sent to rain-affected people of Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar and Mirpurkhas districts and the dispatching of relief goods would continue until the rehabilitation of the rain- and flood-hit people.

  1. CM Shahbaz Sharif's suggestion to form a Commission to decide the issue of new provinces is very logical and correct. PPP should agree with it and ask all parties to join in. Since it will require a constitutional amendment to carve new provinces, everyone's involvement will help in passing that amendment.
