Lahore High Court Justice Khalid Mahmood Khan reprimanded the Punjab Police inspector general (IG) on Tuesday for failing to find a minor girl only because the victim’s record was not available from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
The Punjab IG and Okara police officials appeared in court and the IG said they could not trace Kaneez, six, who went missing months ago as no information regarding the minor was available in the NADRA records. The IG’s statement enraged Justice Mehmood and he ordered the police to take the matter seriously as a six-year-old’s record would not be available with NADRA anyway.
The court said the IG’s statement would be recorded and conveyed to the Punjab chief minister in order to inform him of Punjab Police’s inefficiency, and reserved judgement.
The petition was filed by the mother of the girl after police failed to find her daughter.
Two jailed Indian women have been released, LHC told: Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice (CJ) Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry was informed on Tuesday that two Indian women Parveen Jahan and Gul Afroz, who were jailed at the Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore had been released last week and reached India safely.
On the previous hearing, the LHC CJ had directed the federal government to expedite the process of preparation of nationality documents of the two Indian women, who had served their jail sentences in a narcotics case but were awaiting release due to delay on part of the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. On Tuesday, the deputy attorney general told court that the women had been released on July 29 from the Kot Lakhpat Jail. On this, the court disposed of the suo motu notice.
The two women had written a letter to the LHC CJ from jail stating that they have completed their sentences but were still awaiting release because they were Indians. They said that their passports and other documents were in possession of the Punjab home secretary for clearance. After reading the letter, the LHC CJ had taken suo motu notice of the issue and directed the Punjab home secretary and Kot Lakhpat Jail superintendent to file reports on the issue.
