Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) consumers, both the retail and bulk, owe at least Rs 36 billion to the utility for the last couple of years.
However, the management of the KWSB has not taken steps to ensure the recovery of such a huge amount of money, sources told Pakistan Today.
The consumers of Zone-I, which includes nine former towns of the metropolis, have to pay at least Rs 4.68 billion to the KWSB.
According to the data of due payments as of July 2011, former Keamari town was liable to pay Rs 518.64 million to the utility, SITE 492.81 million, Baldia 370.59 million, Orangi 856.41 million, North Nazimabad 476.38 million, North Karachi 721.24 million, Gulberg 484.57 million, Liaquatabad 627.74 million and Gadap 139.37 million.
Besides Zone-I, at least charges of Rs 12.99 billion are yet to be recovered from utility’s Zone-II that includes Lyari 725.19 million, Saddar 3.23 billion, Jamshed 1.04 billion, Gulshan-e-Iqbal around 1 billion, Landhi 712.25 million, Korangi 521.73 million, Malir 540.01 million, Bin Qasim 115.29 million and Shah Faisal 405.716 million.
Moreover, the bulk consumers which include industries, cattle colonies and the government consumers have to clear off Rs 23.13 billion.
The KWSB is also yet to receive 323.52 million from the Korangi Industrial Area, 632.43 million from the Landhi Industrial Area, 712.43 million from the cattle colony, 196.75 million from the FB Area, 187.73 million from North Karachi, 1.31 billion from SITE, 1.50 billion from bulk consumers, 17.623 billion from government consumers and 503.89 million from assorted consumers.
Despite the financial burden on the utility and the dues, the present management of the water board is too lethargic to launch a recovery crackdown.
