A special security campaign namely “Secure Lahore” would be launched for Lahore from the first of Ramazan, said Chief City Police Officer Ahmed Raza Tahir on Sunday while presiding over a high-level meeting held in connection with security arrangements for Ramazan at his office.
The CCPO said a comprehensive security plan had been chalked out for the campaign to be launched from Ramazan 01. He said he was not in favor of police pickets, but the pickets would gradually be removed after reduction in crime rate, particularly street crime.
He said provision of foolproof security would be ensured at sahri, taraveeh and aftaar timings and inspector-level officers had been deputed at all police stations to improve security and bring about a reduction in crime.
The CCPO said, during the last two months, 22 culprits involved in kidnapping for ransom had been arrested, and abducted people recovered, reducing the kidnapping incidents considerably. Ahmad pointed out that a search-and-sweep process, with active assistance of secret agencies, had been launched throughout the city to eliminate any possibility of terrorist acts and, in this connection, liaison between all four provincial police headquarters had been improved.
Ahmad said the Lahore Police had taken strict action against robbers and car-snatchers, and as many as 500 motorcycles and cars had been returned to their rightful owners during the last two months. The CCPO said he would soon make a personal check on the new SHOs and, if any innocent citizens were found locked-up or tortured in any police station, the SHO concerned would be suspended, while the DSP concerned would be transferred, following strict departmental action.
