NEW DELHI – Growing increasingly sick and tired of the undue criticism of repealing Article 370 of the constitution, which stripped Kashmiris of the special autonomy they had for seven decades, Indian Prime Minister finally decided to school his critics.
In an exclusive interview with The Dependent, Modi said it is ridiculous that the move is being called ‘unilateral’. “There were two of us – Amit Shah and I,” the Indian premier said.
However, the Indian PM was especially perturbed over the fact that the move was persistently called ‘undemocratic’ by his critics.
“It’s ridiculous that they have the audacity to question the democratic credentials of the largest democracy in the world,” Modi said.
“Pray tell how the move is undemocratic when it is being lauded by the majority of the country. Forget that, tell me how the move is undemocratic given that I was elected – in a landslide triumph – to do precisely this?” he asked.
“It was a part of our manifesto based on which the people gave us votes. I don’t know what democracy means for others, but for us following through with pre-election vows after winning the elections is an integral part of it.”
