Wildlife Management Board seizes black bear from street performer

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) Friday seized a three-year-old black bear worth Rs0.5 million from a street performer near Kuri Road.

Assitant Director Sakhawat Ali said the black bear was held in the jurisdiction of Punjab whereas IWMB first raided the spot and conducted the operation. Later on, the bear was handed to over to Punjab Wildlife Protection Department which pleads the case before the court.

He said the bears were illegally hunted from the Northern Areas of the country where the hunters used to shoot down mother bears first and then take away bear cubs in order to avoid female bear’s attack in response.

He said the bear pups were kept in captivity and groomed for bear dance in the streets and in some areas for baiting which was the violation of wildlife laws and banned in the country.

To a question, he said the recovered bear was shifted to Balkasar Bear Sanctuary also Bioresource Research Centre (BRC).
