QUETTA: A miner died in a coal mine accident at Duki on Thursday.
According to details, a landslide was reported in a coal mine at Duki and as a result, one miner, Akhtar Muhammad, came under the debris and died. Coworkers recovered the dead and shifted it to the hospital. The deceased was reported to be an Afghan citizen. After completion of necessary formalities, the dead body was sent to Afghanistan.
It may be noted that during the last five weeks, at least 20 miners died in different accidents in coal mines of Duki. However, in another coal mine at Gestri, an area of Mach in district Bolan, a landslide was also reported due to which a miner Khuda Bukhsh Sumalani sustained injuries. He was shifted to Civil Hospital Mach and later referred to Quetta for further treatment. The affected coal mine was temporally closed and an investigation started.
On January 27, two miners identified as Niaz Muhammad Tarakai and Sulemankhail Tarakai, who were citizens of Afghanistan, were killed when a trolley hit them inside a coal mine in Duki, Balochistan. Duki Assistant Commissioner Meran Baloch said that the bodies of the killed miners were shifted to Civil Hospital Duki where after completion of medico-legal formalities, they were sent to Afghanistan.
On January 21, as many as three miners had died in a coal mine mishap in Duki. As per details, a gas explosion had occurred in a coal mine at Duki and as a result, three miners died and 19 others became unconscious. According to SHO Ibrar Hussain, one side of a coal mine collapsed due to an explosion and four miners were buried under debris. After the incident, local mine workers started rescue operations on a self-help basis. Two miners Abdul Ghani son of Speen, caste Samalzai, a resident of Zabul, Afghanistan and Muhammad Umer, son of Abdul Shakoor, caste Samalzai and resident of Zabul, Afghanistan, who were busy in the rescue operation, also died. The dead body of one of the four miners trapped under the debris, named Abdul Manan, son of Muhammad Essa, caste Malakhail and resident of Killi Zaman, was also later recovered.
On January 2, a gas explosion in a coal mine in the Chamalang area of Dukki district had claimed four lives and injured one. According to Station House Officer (SHO) Chamalang, four deceased labourers, who were burnt alive, belonged to the same family. Those died included an uncle, two brothers and one relative while the fifth miner was critically injured. The deceased and injured were shifted to a nearby hospital. Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal had expressed grief over the unfortunate incident and directed the concerned authorities to ensure a safe work environment for the mine workers to prevent further incidents.
