Pakistan ranks lowest in patriotism index after only 11% preferred peace over war

ISLAMABAD – According to a survey conducted by Gallup, Pakistan was ranked the lowest in the list of least patriotic nations in Asia falling behind India, Bangladesh and China.

World Index, which used the Gallup survey, shared the results on its Twitter handle in which Pakistan is at the bottom with 11pc with Vietnam second from bottom with the same percentile.

World Index’s report titled ‘ASIA: Willing to fight for the country’ ranks asked people if they would fight for the country, and only 11pc of Pakistanis replied in the negative.

Analysts note that such a small percentage of people actually saying no to fighting and seemingly preferring a more rational route towards conflict is a worrying sign for Pakistan.

“Such a few number of people realise that the country doesn’t need more people to fight for it, and actually needs more people who would say no to fighting and work to prevent it,” said a prominent expert in peacefare.

“What is also surprising is that a fifth of the way into the 21st century there are so many who define patriotism by the willingness to fight and die for the country, and not by the willingness to live and make lives better,” noted a scholar in peace studies.
