LAHORE: Hina Shehzadi, a local transgender rights activist on Wednesday moved a sessions court against the mistreatment and abuse of transgender community in the district.

The community also staged a silent protest to voice out their concerns and the harassment they face from other members of civil society.

The petition named Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Bashir Ahmed Nasir and Station House Officer (SHO) Mohammad Javed of Misri Shah Police Station as a party.

The petition, that sought protection for the transgender community in Lahore stated that trans persons are the victims of abuse without any reason. It also accused a prime suspect among other individuals of participating in such derogatory behaviour.

Asking the court to ensure a safe space for the community and initiate legal action against Goli Butt, Shehzadi stated that members of the community often face death threats.

The petition has been received in court but has not been assigned to a judge for a hearing.

In October 2018, the Supreme Court (SC) had issued directives to the federal and all the provincial governments to formulate a policy for the welfare of the transgender community and to ensue their constitutional right to a dignified life, with an objective to end social exclusion of the community and to bring them into mainstream society.
