ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Thursday said that “controlling Pakistan’s increasing population is a bigger issue for the nation than water scarcity”.
While heading a suo motu case on the country’s increasing population, Justice Nisar said that “Pakistan’s resources are shrinking and land available for agricultural is diminishing.”
As the hearing went underway, the attorney general informed the bench that “a digital awareness campaign is underway”. Moreover, CJP Nisar then said, “The authorities still do not have a comprehensive plan on the matter,” adding that “the apex court will only outline steps but the government needs to tackle the issue”.
Following this, the apex court adjourned the hearing till January 14.
On December 5, Prime Minister Imran Khan was invited as the chief guest at the population growth symposium hosted by the top judge.
In July, CJP Nisar took suo motu action on the increase in population, where the top judge remarked that “there is dire need to formulate a uniform and effective policy to curb population growth”.
