PESHAWAR: An illegal kidney transplant facility was raided and sealed by authorities in the Dabgari Gardens area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday.
The raid, a joint operation by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the provincial Health Care Commission, was conducted under directives from the Peshawar High Court (PHC) to act against illegal organ transplant facilities in the province.
At least 11 operation theatres in the facility were sealed by the authorities, while three others were served notices.
Similar operations have also been launched in Mardan, Dera Ismail Khan and Hazara divisions as well.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) illegal organ trade is the removal of an organ from the body for the purpose of commercial transaction.
“Payment for organs is likely to take unfair advantage of the poorest and most vulnerable groups, undermines altruistic donation and leads to profiteering and human trafficking,” the definition by WHO reads.
