LAHORE: Five Punjab University (PU) students allegedly associated with the Islami Jamiat Taleba (IJT) were suspended on Thursday for beating up a man who was sitting with his wife on campus.

The PU administration also suspended a security guard ─ who was present at the time ─ for his inaction.

The man, identified as Awais Rind, had gone to pick up his wife where he was beaten up by the IJT students.

In a series of videos, going viral on social media, a large crowd of onlookers are seen gathered outside the PU History Department as some IJT goons are seen circling the man and then started beating him without any apparent reason, as the female student tries to explain to them that he is her husband.

“Hey stop, why are you doing this, he is my husband,” the female student can be seen screaming.

“What has he done? just tell me, he is my husband,” she was further heard saying. “Who were they? just tell me, is this a university?” she had asked.

Following the incident, it was reported that PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed took notice and ordered PU Registrar Khalid Khan to take strict action against the students involved.

Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar also took notice of the incident and sought a report from the VC on the matter.
