Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi may become the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly if Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif is convicted in a corruption scandal, a local media outlet reported on Monday.

Abbasi was elected to the National Assembly in by-polls conducted on Sunday.

Shehbaz was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) earlier this month in Ashiana Iqbal Housing Scheme scam. The former chief minister of Punjab has denied the allegations.

According to reports, Abbasi is the top choice of PML-N senior leadership as he is regarded as a trustworthy and close aide of Nawaz Sharif.
