  • DBA says no petition to be acceptable without Rs100 special dam fund

The executive committee of the District Bar Association of Khanewal, a district in the Punjab province, has imposed a special fund on every petitioner to support a national movement, set up and backed by the government to build Diamer-Basha and Mohmand dams.

Signed by DBA President Advocate Muhammad Ajmal Khan Bhutta and General Secretary Chaudhry Muhammad Kaleem Arshad, the press note issued soon after the meeting said that every petitioner would have to submit Rs 100 in the dam fund.

“The executive committee of the District Bar Association has decided in its meeting that every petitioner of all cases will have to submit Rs100 for dam fund. No petition would be acceptable without the special dam fund,” the press note stated.

Supporting initiative by Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar, the lawyers asked the petitioners to donate for the national fund for dams. As experts continue to debate the concept of building dams with public donations, the government hopes to raise a sizable portion of the fund from every Pakistani citizen and expatriates.

In a brief televised address last week, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that Pakistan would face drought-like conditions by 2025 if immediate steps were not taken. “We have a storage capacity of only 30 days for water when the safe period for water storage is 120 days. This is why making the dam for us is so important,” he said.
