ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was shifted back to Adiala Jail from Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) after he insisted to go back despite deteriorating health, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and former federal minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said on Tuesday.
Rejecting the reports claiming that Nawaz was shifted to Adiala after signs of improvement, the PML-N leader said the medical board formed to examine Nawaz, after conducting all tests, had declared his health condition unstable and advised him to stay at the hospital for longer, however, he was moved back to the jail after the former premier refused to stay and insisted on going back to Adiala.
She also said that Nawaz didn’t want to go to the hospital in the first place and had only gone because his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, had forced him to. Marriyum also said that all other League workers and leaders were extremely concerned about the PML-N supremo’s health.
Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam were arrested on July 13, minutes after they returned to the country seeking to revitalise their beleaguered party ahead of the July 25 general election.
Earlier in the day, the caretaker government had ruled out the option of moving Nawaz abroad and maintained that the PML-N supremo was recovering well at PIMS.
The deposed premier was shifted from Adiala Jail to PIMS as a precautionary measure on his personal physician’s recommendation.
Sharif’s hospital ward was declared a sub-jail after the former premier was shifted to PIMS from Adiala Jail on Sunday night. Sharif complained of pain in chest and arms. Doctors requested jail authorities to transfer him to a hospital so he may be given emergency cardiac attention.
Nawaz, who flew from London to Lahore along with his daughter Maryam Nawaz on July 13, was arrested on arrival at the Allama Iqbal International Airport. They were flown to Islamabad via a helicopter and shifted to jail, where he is serving the sentence awarded to him in the Avenfield properties case along Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt (r) Safdar.
