LAHORE: Restoration of student unions has not been included in manifestos of five major political parties ahead of the upcoming general elections.
Youth representatives, while speaking at a dialogue on Democratic and Peaceful Governance and Sustainable Development organised by Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said that neither restoration of student unions nor seminary reforms had been included in the manifestos of the five major political parties.
The unions were banned in 1989 and the ban has remained in place since then.
PILDAT President Ahmed Bilal Mehboob said that Pakistan had on of the highest proportions of youth population in the world and they should be allowed to engage in national affairs in a constructive manner.
