Hussain Nawaz’s Twitter followers increase post ex-PM’s arrest: report

ISLAMABAD: Hussain Nawaz Sharif’s Twitter handle has seen a dramatic increase in the number of followers since the arrest of his father Nawaz Sharif and sister Maryam Nawaz and their shift to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, local media reports have informed.

Former premier Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam were arrested after an accountability court announced their conviction and sentence with regard to the Avenfield Apartments case.

The twitter handle @Hussain_NSharif was created in November 2017 but was however not very active and only five tweets were made during the last eight months. The account has also not yet been verified by Twitter.

However, on July 8, the return schedule of the former premier from London was shared on this account and it also shared details of the ‘miserable conditions’ faced by his father during his first night in Adiala jail.

Since then the number of followers of the said twitter handle is increasing day by day as there were 13,900 (13.9K) followers on Saturday, 20,500 (20.5K) on Monday while the number reached 22,800(22.8K) till filing of this story.

A large number of media houses and outlets have begun following this account in order to remain in touch with latest announcements possibly made by Sharif family through this account.

Meanwhile, Maryam Nawaz Sharif was an active figure on social media along with running a social media cell. She commented on political developments, shared her thoughts and updated the followers about different decisions through her twitter handle @MaryamNSharif which has an estimate of 4.75 million followers.

However, now that she is unable to use electronic gadgets in jail, it is possible that the Sharif family would use younger Sharif’s account as their official spokes-place.
