MUNICH – The defending FIFA World Cup champions Germany scored a late late winner in the final Group stage match against South Korea in the 1179th minute at Munich Airport. The strike came at the baggage collection minutes after the national squad landed at the airport following their return from Russia.

Midfielder Toni Kroos, who had struck a late 95th minute winner against Sweden, was again the hero for Germany as he kicked the ball into the baggage carousel over 19 hours after the match against Korea had kicked off, prompting wild celebrations among the German players.

It is pertinent to mention here that after Korea at taken a 2-0 lead at the Kazan Arena, Germany had pulled one goal back at the hotel, with substitute Thomas Muller’s strike. A wonder goal by Marco Reus in the Kazan-Munich flight equalised the score line, before Kroos’ last ditch winner.

However, the word from FIFA is that despite the win, Germany would be playing the knockout stages at home.

“It’s only fair that they play the rest of the tournament where they scored the winner,” a FIFA official told The Dependent.

Germany, meanwhile, want the FIFA decision to be challenged by a VAR at home.
