CJP promises to liberate Karachi from tanker mafia

KARACHI: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Thursday pledged to cleanse the port city of the tanker mafia.

While presiding over the hearing of a case regarding the supply of potable drinking water and sanitation in Sindh at the Supreme Court (SC) Karachi Registry, the CJP praised the report submitted by the SC-appointed Sindh Water Commission and directed that progress and performance reports of the province’s clean drinking water and sanitation should be made on a monthly basis.

Furthermore, he was informed that Manchar Lake is currently providing 300 million cubic metres of water per annum by the secretary for water.

“You did not spend [even a rupee] out of Rs14.5 billion. The state of the sea [waters] is deplorable. Every day, 450 gallons of sewage water is entering the sea,” remarked the CJP in reference to the failure of concerned authorities in cleaning the lake in the past ten years.

Justice Nisar vowed to tackle the menace of tanker mafia by announcing that the court would oversee the progress on the matter and further added that each citizen of the metropolis must be provided with clean water.

Further, he expressed resentment over pathetic condition of sea sites, adding that the sea sites seem like garbage dump sites in Karachi.

The CJP further remarked that the court will itself monitor the water situation in Karachi, adding that the supply of clean water to the people of Karachi should be ensured.
