SC acquits one accused of murder, upholds lifetime imprisonment of other

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday while disposing of appeal pleas of two accused against their conviction in the murder case of a youth in Sadiqabad Area of Rawalpindi acquitted one of the accused and upheld life imprisonment of the other.

A three-member bench of the SC, headed by acting Chief Justice, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa heard the appeal pleas filed by accused Zafar Ullah Jan and Asif Butt Thursday.

Both the accused were handed death sentence and fined by a Trial Court in the murder of Faraz Abbas on October 28, 2010, at the residence of main accused Zafar Ullah.

The Lahore High Court Later converted the death sentence into life imprisonment.

The SC after reviewing the facts upheld the lifetime imprisonment penalty of the key accused, Zafar Ullah Jan while acquitted his accomplice, Asif Butt for want of evidence besides allowing him the benefit of the doubt.
