KARACHI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Haleem Adil Sheikh on Tuesday filed a petition against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif seeking treason trial against him.

The petition, filed in Sindh High Court (SHC), has been filed for his May 12 interview on Pakistan’s involvement in 2008 Mumbai attacks.

A similar petition was filed in Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday and was deemed maintainable. The petition states that former prime minister’s interview damaged the country’s image, paved way for the foreign rivalry, and potentially can result in sanctions from United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

The petition further said that Nawaz’s interview also shed light on the UN resolution against Hafiz Saeed, who has been suspected of planning Mumbai attacks, since years.

“The former premier’s statement implies that he is propagating against the state in order to retaliate against his lifetime disqualification by Supreme Court from holding any public office and potential conviction in the trial,” the petition said.

The petitioner stated that Sharif, through his Mumbai attacks statement, has committed a treason, therefore, a case should be registered against should be registered against him in this regard.

Shiekh also said that Nawaz Sharif’s name should also be placed on Exit Control List (ECL), and interior ministry alerted to file a complaint against former premier.
