- Police say PTI workers among nominated accused in FIR under charges of terrorism
KARACHI: A first information report (FIR) was registered by Karachi police against a group accused of staging violent protest after the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl in Manghopir.
The death had sparked protests in Orangi Town — in which at least one person was killed while several others injured — after the Rabia’s body was found a day earlier. While the minor’s family demanded justice by placing the body on the road, the protest that initiated from the same neighbourhood turned violent.
Orangi Town SP told media that the police had also nominated the local leadership of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI) in the FIR. He added that six of the 150 protesters were arrested.
“The FIR was lodged under charges of terrorism,” he further said.
Also, Karachi-West DIG Amir Farooqi confirmed that the FIR was registered against protesters
SINDH GOVT CLAIMS PTI PLAYED ‘POLITICS’:
While talking to media after a visit to Orangi Town and meeting the victim’s parents, Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Sial said the PTI was playing “dirty politics over a girl’s body”.
“Two of the three suspects were already in police custody and so there was no justification to stage demonstration,” he added, promising to provide justice if any policeman is found guilty mishandling the protest.
PTI DEMANDS FIR AGAINST POLICE:
Haleem Adil Shaikh, a local PTI leader, claimed that the violence on Tuesday was the outcome of mishandling by police. He clarified that no PTI worker was involved in inciting the protesters.
He also explained that none of the party members or those participating in the protests were armed, adding that media persons would testify in favour of his party members.
Demanding FIR against the law enforcement agency, he said such loss of human life could have been avoided by handling the protest efficiently.
Meanwhile, a local court in Karachi remanded two suspects, involved in the rape and murder of the minor in Manghopir, into police custody.
Judicial Magistrate West remanded the suspects, identified as Raheem and Fazal, into police custody till April 25.
