PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan said on Wednesday that his party’s 13 senators will vote for the candidate fielded by Balochistan Chief Minister Abdul Quddus Bazinjo, adding that he believes the next Senate chairman should belong to Balochistan.

Talking to reporters, Khan said that the PTI does not want a Senate chairman from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

He said that they were afraid that in case the Senate chairman is from the PML-N, they may enact laws to safeguard the Sharif family from the charges of corruption they face. He added that the PTI cannot work with a party like Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Khan said that his party will meet on Friday to come up with a strategy in this regard.

Referring to the meeting between Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam chief Fazlur Rehman with the heads of both PML-N and PPP, Imran Khan said, “The book Alice in the Wonderland has a saying which explains this perfectly: ‘When you don’t know where you want to go, it does not matter which road you take’.” He said that the fact that Rehman is now meeting everyone shows that he has no strategy whatsoever.

He further said that he has lists of members [who allegedly sold their votes] that are circulating on social media; however, he said that they cannot remove someone from the party based on rumours since the voting itself was secret. He said that the PTI cannot prove their case in court based on allegations made on social media, adding that the system set by these people enables such acts.

Imran Khan said that the two major parties of the country did not agree to bring reforms in the electoral system since they have their own vested interest in keeping the old system going.
