MIRPUR KHAS: A Civil Hospital Mirpur Khas doctor on Monday was beaten up by a group of nurses who alleged that he had subjected them to sexual harassment.

The police’s help was sought as the doctor was thrashed. The paramedic staff also intervened and tried to pacify the exasperated women from releasing their fury on the doctor.

An inconsolably sobbing nurse claimed that the doctor had been sexually exploiting her and others in the operation theatre (OT) for a week. In his defence, the doctor claimed that the female group had ‘attacked’ him after he stopped them from ‘doing make-up’ in the OT.

A three-member inquiry committee has been formed to probe into the matter by the hospital administration.

Soon after the incident, it was disclosed that this was not the first time the doctor in question was accused of sexual misconduct.

Hospital documents revealed that he was first accused of sexual misconduct in 2014. After an investigation by the hospital authorities, he was found guilty of subjecting a woman to unwanted sexual advances.

Although he was then dismissed by a notification issued by the hospital chief secretary, it is reported that he was able to keep his position at the hospital secure by exercising his ‘influence’.

Taking notice of the incident, Health Minister Dr Sikandar Mandhro has announced that the accused will be handed a strict punishment if found to be guilty.

“In this profession [of serving humanity], such [behaviour] is unacceptable. We will ensure [if found guilty] he will be given the strictest punishment,” Dr Mandhro told a local news channel.

However, if he was restored despite being found guilty of questionable morals before, then “we are answerable”, said the minister.
