PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday gave orders to the human rights directorate to supervise the investigation into the public humiliation of a girl in Dera Ismail Khan.

A 16-year-old-girl was stripped naked and then paraded in a village near the remote town of Chodwan on October 27. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) inspector general of police assured the victim’s family that they would be provided full security. He guaranteed a thorough investigation on the matter.

The two-member bench, comprising of Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Syed Afsar, were provided with the written response of the IGP after a petition was filed by the girl’s mother, Maheen Bibi*, who pleaded the court for swift justice and security for her family.

The KP police chief while speaking on the matter said that a joint investigation team had been formed in this regard and that eight of the nine accused in the FIR had already been arrested. He added that efforts are being made to arrest the ninth criminal, named Sajawal, who is still at large. And that a person who is accused of making the footage is also in police custody.

In a petition in the PHC, the victim had stated that she received threats from the criminals and was not provided with any security by the police. Addressing the petitioner’s safety concern the IGP said that a five-member team had been deployed to the victim’s house.

The victim told the court that the Sajawal, main absconder, who is still at large, is a government servant should be suspended immediately.

The lawyer of the petitioner, Qazi Muhammad Anwar said “We are satisfied as whatever we have demanded has been addressed by the respondents,” Anwar told the court.”
