ISLAMABAD: Inspector General of Police Islamabad Khalid Khattak said on Saturday that closed circuit television (CCTV) footage of the attack on senior journalist Ahmed Noorani does not show the faces of the assailants clearly but the probe has revealed that four men riding on two motorcycles had followed the journalist’s car from Rawalpindi and attacked him near Zero Point.
While briefing the Senate’s Standing Committee on Interior at Parliament House, Khattak said that Noorani’s case presented a challenge for the police but they are working hard to solve it.
He said geofences were being set up in the area where the attack took place. Geofencing would create a virtual geographic boundary, enabling software to trigger a response when a mobile device enters or leaves the area.
The assault on Noorani took place on the federal capital’s Khayaban-e-Suharwardy Road. His car was stopped near Zero Point Interchange while he was on his way home to Islamabad from Rawalpindi. The attackers severely beat up Noorani and his driver with iron rods after throwing out the keys from the car’s ignition.
The culprits then sped away on their motorcycles towards Zero Point when onlookers began to gather at the site and traffic started coming to a halt on the busy road.
Noorani was taken to the Polyclinic Hospital by a passerby where he was administered medical aid.
