National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was contemplating over filing references against Sharif family in the Accountability Court tomorrow.

The Executive Board meeting of NAB is going to be held on Defense Day to file references on Panama cases against the former premier Nawaz Sharif, his three children and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.

On September 1, the Combined Investigation Teams (CIT) of NAB Lahore and Rawalpindi submitted their final conclusive reports to NAB’s prosecution wing. Well-placed source within NAB informed Pakistan Today that the Prosecution Wing scrutinised the reports of both the CITs and called upon the Executive Board to hold the meeting regarding Panama cases.

“NAB will decide to file Panama case references against the Sharif family tomorrow, within the timeframe given by the Supreme Court verdict on Panama cases. The accountability court can order to put the names of Sharif family in the Exit Control List (ECL),” sources added.

Talking to Pakistan Today, NAB spokesman Asim Ali Nawazish condemned the speculations being aired on media regarding the recommendations sent to NAB chairman to put the names of Sharif family in ECL as well as freezing the assets. “The recommendations of putting Sharif family in the ECL by NAB Lahore DG were not made at all. Therefore, no rejections were made by NAB chairman,” he categorically rejected the speculations.

Earlier, the media had reported that there was a clear divide within NAB to put the names of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his children and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in the ECL as well as to confiscate the assets. Well-placed sources within NAB informed Pakistan Today that it was proposed to put Sharif family on ECL and freeze the assets; but was declined as the references are already being sent to the accountability courts on September 6. Moreover, the Sharif family was pursuing the cases and it was too early to put the names in ECL and freezing the assets.

Furthermore, accountability court will be in a best position to decide on the same. “Looking at the magnitude of the references against Sharif family, it is more likely that accountability court will order to put former premier Nawaz Sharif, his children and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on the ECL and order to freeze the assets, once the references get tried and decided in the accountability court,” sources added.

Barrister Ali Zafar – former Supreme Court Bar president – talking to Pakistan Today said that the accountability court can order to put the names of Sharif family in the ECL and freeze the assets within country. “It is either NAB that can request to add the names of the Sharif family on the ECL and freezing the assets or the accountability court, which can do it through the final verdict on Panama,” he added.

Earlier, in its final verdict in the Panama case, the SC had directed NAB to investigate the four references against Nawaz, his children, his son-in-law captain (r) Safdar and Ishaq Dar and file them in the accountability court within six weeks. The deadline – given by the Supreme Court – ends on September 8. NAB formed two CITs to investigate the references that questioned JIT members regarding their report especially volume-x.

Meanwhile, in the midst of the Panama cases, the former PM was abroad to see his ailing wife since August 30.
