KARACHI: In his letter to Sindh CM, AD Khawaja has criticised the massive reshuffling of senior police officers, in light of the recent transfer of five AIGs.

Khawaja said that such transfers belittled the authority of the IG office and “paralysed” the police secretariat, further imploring the CM to protect the police department from such maladministration.

The IG Sindh reminded the chief minister of the decision taken in the previous apex committee session where the police department was deemed to be autonomous with respect to administrative decision-making. He highlighted that these transfers and postings contradicted that decision.

He said that the IGP, despite having administrative control was not consulted in the matter which was solely based on the orders of the home department and Services and General Administration Department.

“A number of staff officers serving in CPO were called by Home Ministry and pressurised unnecessarily,” said Khawaja in his letter to Murad Ali Shah.

“This situation is ultimately leading to weak command and control over subordinates”, he added.

Earlier, on July 1, Sindh government had notified the withdrawal of powers of the IGP on issues of transfers and postings. Also this year in April, the government suspended Khawaja from the office and appointed Additional IG Abdul Majeed Dasti, which was later revoked by the Sindh High Court.

In the letter, Khawaja further emphasised the need for his authority to be recognised, adding that “the recommendations sent by this office in respect of […] disciplinary proceedings against certain officers […] are being consistently ignored, encouraging misconduct”. He warned that if the situation persists, then the law and order situation could seriously deteriorate in the province.
