KARACHI: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Saturday awarded capital punishment to a couple and jailed their accomplice for life imprisonment in an eight-year-old girl kidnapping and murder case.
The ATC judge found Bilal, his wife Reema and his friend Waqar guilty of kidnapping an eight-year-old girl for ransom and later killing her.
According to the prosecution, the child was cousin of Reema who along with her husband and his friend kidnapped the girl from her school in Azizabad area. The convicts had demanded Rs1 million from the girl’s family for her safe release and hurled threats for dire consequences over non-payment. They had killed the girl when her family was unable to pay the ransom amount, the prosecution maintained.
The defence; however, opposed the charges and maintained that accused were not involved in the offence and were falsely implicated in the case.
After hearing the arguments from both sides, the judge pronounced the verdict, observing that the prosecution successfully established its case against the accused beyond any shadow of doubt.
As per the court procedure, the capital punishment to the couple is subjected to be endorsed by the Sindh High Court.
