One more infant dies of malnutrition in Thar

MITHI: One more infant died on Monday due to malnutrition, bringing the death toll of the current month to 17, hospital officials confirmed.

Eleven days old child, Krishan, from village Janjhahr died at the Civil Hospital Mithi, Thar district.

According to the figures confirmed by the Civil Hospital and other health-care facilities, approximately 99 children have died in the current year from January 1, besides 59 adult males and females.

According to reports, there is a rise in the cases of gastro due to non-availability of clean drinking water, as 50 per cent of the 400 water plants installed by the provincial government are said to be out of work.

District Health Officer Akhlaq Ahmed informed that since January 1, 2017, 1, 53,988 patients were brought to OPD, out of which 31,344 were the children.

He added that 2,757 children and 6,430 male/female patients were admitted, while 480 patients including 154 children were referred to other hospitals.

Akhlaq Ahmed said that 17 infants have died due to different diseases in the month of April only. He said that the causes were low birth weight, premature birth, pneumonia, breathing problem, and other medical conditions.

The DHO added that free and better health facilities are being provided in government hospitals across the district.
