KARACHI: Former Sindh information minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Sunday implied that Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan should have resigned after the Quetta commission’s report on ethical gorunds.

“Why didn’t he put the names of the prime minister and his family members on exit control list,” he asked.

In its report on the August 8 Quetta carnage, the commission had said that Chaudhry Nisar’s meetings with the heads of three banned organisations on October 21 werer regrettable. The commission had also pointed out several weaknesses on the part of the ministry.

The Interior Ministry had earlier dismissed the findings of the commission as ‘unnecessary, uncalled for and a violation of natural justice’.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Memon alleged that Nisar often takes U-turns and threatening the opposition is the only tactic he knows. Questioning the interior minister’s priorities, he said that Nisar showed over-efficiency in spot fixing case while being lenient towards Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family.

The PPP leader said that Nisar should at least respect his post and work honestly, instead of making tall claims. “He does all what he should not,” said Memon.

He also questioned Nisar’s long absences after any significant terror incident. “He [Nisar] thinks that Pakistan is his property and he can do whatever he wants but he is mistaken, we wont let this happen,” Memon said, adding that Pakistan could not go on like this.

Clarifying his position on the on-going cases against him, Memon said a had been filed against him in October 2016. He swore not to take any stay and  face the charges.

He expressed firm faith in the judiciary and said that he returned to Pakistan to present himself before the courts and not to take charge of any department.

“Pakistan Peoples Party will contest all these baseless claims,” he maintained.

The former provincial minister recently ended his two-year self-imposed exile, after which he was shortly detained by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). He is facing monetary misappropriation and corruption charges.

Last week, he was granted protective bail by the Islamabad High Court against Rs2 million surety bond.
